So it’s like that now?

Gmail delivered the shocking news—I've been ousted as the Mayor of my beloved Ashmont Grill.

There’s never been a time since I've been on Foursquare where I haven’t been the Mayor of Ashmont Grill. Until now.

And to be taken out by my friend Rakiesha, who I basically introduced to the Grill—well, talk about adding insult to injury. I get a little sick, have less disposable income for going out and right behind my back, Rakiesha keeps going without me until she ends up being the Mayor. Talk about loyalty.

But it's okay; I'm feeling better now and there's some cash money with my name on it. See you at the Grill soon hon. ;-)

Keeping it Real: Humanism, Dissent & Conversation

Humanism
Dignity of humankind
Ability to determine right and wrong
Reject the supernatural or
divine authority of religious texts.

We need to take away the idea of idolatry (in a religious sense) based on social media profiles.

----

Guided by reason.
Inspired by compassion.
Informed by experience.
Grounded by the commonality of the human condition.

----

Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships.

Knowledge of the world is derived by observation, experimentation, and rational analysis.

Working to benefit society maximizes individual happiness.

---

My experience:

Over a decade working in performing arts - professional theatre.

What theatre is:

Collaborative.
Listening.
Perishable.
It does not exist without an audience.

A supportive community is essential

----

Words about theatre from a mentor:

The audience can tell when a company isn't happy and doesn't get along.
Be gracious and welcoming.
This is their home, too.
You don't know if it's someone's first time here or the anonymous donor who gave $500,000.

---

"Civilization literally means the expression and development of civility: respect for others, the best possible encouragement of every person's cultural and spiritual resources, the proper weaving of each individual into the fabric of society." - Donald R. Peterson, Rutgers University

----

"In a conglomerate culture like ours, finding common purpose is not always easy.  When Clark Ker, was president of University of California, he said that every university was composed of three main constituencies: students, who are interested in sex; alumni, who are interested in football; and faculty, who are interested in parking." - Donald R. Peterson, Rutgers University

---

"We need to take advantage of our diversity.  We need ot find ways to work together to serve the communities of which we are all a part.

At the core, each of us needs to acknowledge our human loyalities as well as the aversions that often arise in the first response to others who are different from us. We need to turn our loyalites towards the higher human group." - Donald R. Peterson, Rutgers University
